Moms favor cots that attach to the bed as co-sleepers and have height-adjustable mattresses - IKEA cots (adjustable via a carpenter) are praised as lasting to about 3 years, while some branded cribs (Huny Huny, Star and Daisy/Babyhug wooden ones) drew complaints about safety, assembly, or strong chemical smell needing airing out.
⚠️ Caution:Ensure the cot is securely fastened with no gaps to the adult bed, lower the mattress once baby can pull to stand, and air out new wooden cribs to dissipate chemical odors before use.
Parents want their baby close at night but safely contained, and worry about cots that wobble, off-gas chemicals, or are outgrown too soon. The community reassures that an adjustable co-sleeper - the IKEA cot tweaked by a carpenter is a favorite - keeps baby at bed level and lasts to around 3 years, while warning against poorly-built options and advising to simply air out any strong-smelling new wooden crib before use.
Here's what moms in our community shared based on their own experience.
The IKEA cot can be adjusted to a co-sleeper and goes all the way down so they can't get out - good till about 3 years; a carpenter can drill extra holes to match your bed height.
Choose one whose side bars rise higher without lowering the mattress, so you don't bend over the rails and baby is at your bed level; high railings make it hard to crawl out until at least 1 year - after 1 year my daughter tried to get out.
I had a Baby Hug co-sleeper but could only use it as such until she started standing, then had to lower the mattress.
I had a bad experience with the Huny Huny crib - complicated to assemble, didn't seem safe, instructions in Chinese; it attaches to the bed but isn't height-adjustable, so we got a custom mattress; wheels lock but there's no other securing mechanism.
A Babyhug wooden crib (similar to Star and Daisy) had a strong chemical/treatment smell when opened - we had to air it out for a few days before use.
I use the Mee Mee brand items happily, but for cribs, airing out new wooden ones is wise.
