Empowering mothers worldwide through connection, support, and shared experiences ✨
For newborns under 3 months moms recommend a stretchy wrap, ring sling or Ergo Embrace rather than carry cots, with Indian-made cotton brands like Soul Slings favored for the climate; for older babies, structured carriers with a hip seat (Luvlap, R for Rabbit, Baby Bjorn, Ergobaby, Meditive) are popular.
⚠️ Caution:For young babies, ensure the carrier supports an ergonomic M/J leg position and keeps the airway clear; carry cots are discouraged by babywearing educators. A fit check with an educator is recommended for newborns.
Parents want maximum closeness and skin time with a tiny newborn but worry about safety, hip positioning and overheating in Indian weather. The community reassures that soft wraps and ring slings are the safest, coziest choice for the early weeks - several moms used Soul Slings or a Masilo ring sling from one to two months and loved how it kept baby cuddled - while gently steering away from carry cots and reminding parents to check the M/J leg position and consider a fit check.
Here's what moms in our community shared based on their own experience.
Carry cots aren't recommended by babywearers. Under 3 months, try a stretchy wrap, ring sling, or Ergo Embrace - the safest options. Ring slings are most versatile but have a learning curve. In India, Soul Slings is highly recognised and cotton; the Reddit babywearing group has lots of info.
I got a Godilo by Masilo ring sling at one month - good, usable up to 12 kg.
A 2-month-old is too small for most standard carriers; Ergo Embrace or a stretchy wrap work but lack longevity. A ring sling is versatile - you can even make one with soft cotton/linen and two metal rings.
Ergo and foreign brands use mesh that gets hot in Indian weather. Well-recognised worldwide: Soul Sling, Tula, Happy Baby, Lenny Lamb. Ensure the baby's legs are in an M or J shape with the waistband worn parallel and comfortable.
Body wraps get outgrown - mine felt restricted by 3 months. A structured carrier works long-term. We used a Baby Bjorn until nearly 11 months; great for park walks.
Soul Slings is comfortable from 2 months and keeps baby cuddled to the body; the Lali/Lalli readymade (not the wrap) was comfy after my baby outgrew the Kangaroo wrap at 4-5 months.
The Luvlap Royal Hip Seat carrier - my girl was uncomfortable in others but liked this; used it extensively on vacation and walks.
R for Rabbit Upsy Daisy with adjustable hip seat is rated 3-24 months, better suited to 4-5 months and above.
I used the Meditive hip-seat carrier and was happy with it.
Ergobaby is really comfortable; Almitra Tattva is popular among babywearers with great fabric; Kol Kol is good and widely available second-hand; Mothercare and a sling wrap from Anmol Baby (from 2 months, takes practice) were also liked.
For a sling wrap: good from about 2 months, just takes practice to wrap right; in humid weather it can get sweaty but babies love sleeping in it when cooler.
