Moms prefer silicone mouth-suction aspirators over balloon ones, which aren't strong enough for newborn mucus.
⚠️ Caution:Avoid aggressive suctioning too frequently—it can irritate the nose. If congestion affects breathing/feeding or lasts many days, call your pediatrician.
Parents worry they’re hurting the baby or ‘not getting enough mucus out.’ Moms say saline + gentle suction at the right times is more effective than frequent suctioning.
Here's what moms in our community shared based on their own experience.
Silicone aspirators with mouth suction work better than balloon types for small babies.
Battery-powered aspirators on low setting also help with congestion.
A nasal aspirator is super helpful. I had to use it 2-3 times a day when my 4.5 month old had a bad cold.
I use the Luvlap nasal aspirator. The bulb ones are gentler but less effective; the ones where you suck through the other end are very effective. Start with less suction and slowly increase if your baby cooperates.
Use Nose Frida nasal spray first, then use the aspirator.
A balloon/bulb aspirator isn't enough for small babies - they need higher power. Either a mouth suction one or the battery one on low setting.
With a mouth-suction aspirator even soft/liquid mucus came out, unlike the balloon one which only works when the booger is solid and near the outer side.
Use saline nasal drops 5 minutes before using the aspirator.
It may be a challenge the first few times - you'll have to gently hold their hands down, and once they feel better they get used to it.
