Empowering mothers worldwide through connection, support, and shared experiences ✨
Moms recommend soft chapatis, dosas, rava chilla, veggie parathas, ragi pancakes, and mashed fruits as safe starter finger foods.
⚠️ Caution:Always supervise your baby during finger feeding and ensure foods are soft enough to prevent choking. Introduce one new food at a time to watch for allergies.
Many parents worry about their 8-month-old choking on finger foods or not getting enough nutrition from anything other than purees. Real moms reassure that soft, appropriately sized finger foods help develop motor skills and independence, while still providing essential nutrients when introduced thoughtfully.
Here's what moms in our community shared based on their own experience.
Try chapati mixed with steamed veggies, torn into tiny pieces. Very soft and easy for babies to self-feed.
Rava chilla, oat chilla with yogurt, veggie gram flour chilla, soft paneer or aloo parathas all work great.
Ragi pancakes with banana are nutritious and easy for 8 month old babies to chew.
Look up baby-led weaning. Give steamed fruit cut into pieces if she can pick it up with a pincer grasp; you can also make fruit pancakes. Introduce more variety - watermelon, citrus, banana, pear, apple, papaya, chikoo. The Solid Starts page on Instagram has helpful info.
We started with soft solids - idli, oats-banana-milk pancakes - mash a little and give, and simultaneously put mashed pieces in front of her for self-feeding.
Babies don't need teeth to bite; gums are strong enough. Give soft solid food like steamed pear, apple, veggies, pancakes, dosa, idli. Do really small pieces and avoid anything round or things like almonds to prevent choking.
I mix steamed/boiled veggies into the atta and make a chapati. Knead the dough with curd instead of water to make it really soft. Also rava dosa with curd and veggies fried with ghee - all soft, in tiny pieces.
Rava chilla, oat and rice powder chilla with yogurt and veggies, gram flour chilla, soft paneer or aloo paratha with yogurt, upma, dahi poha, ragi pancakes (banana and ragi in equal quantity). Do tikkis and encourage self-feeding. Add a bit of nut powder or bloomed chia seeds for nutrition.
Dry foods like puffed rice work great - my girl picks them up one by one and it keeps her occupied.
Mathri is best - make very soft mathris or small laddoo bites.
Slurrp Farm No Salt No Sugar teething puffs (baked fruit and vegetable millet puffs) are great with clean ingredients and convenient for travel.
