The Indian Academy of Pediatrics recommends the annual influenza (flu) vaccine from 6 months of age, with two doses four weeks apart the first year. It is worth getting because babies are high-risk for flu complications, but a short delay of a couple of weeks while you locate it is generally fine - confirm the exact window with your paediatrician.
⚠️ Caution:This is general community and guideline information, not a substitute for your paediatrician's advice. Always confirm timing and any delay with your doctor, who knows your child's health and local flu season.
Parents worry that a delay caused by the vaccine being unavailable will leave their baby unprotected or 'behind schedule.' Reassurance from experienced moms is that a couple of weeks' delay is generally acceptable with a doctor's okay, and the more important thing is to get both doses in the first season rather than skip it entirely.
Here's what moms in our community shared based on their own experience.
Can you check with your doctor? I personally wouldn't take vaccines lightly if recommended, especially in India. Doctors know how much you can safely delay. I'm sure 2-3 weeks won't hurt, but if you're planning to delay further, confirm with them.
If it was due on Friday, it's not late yet. A couple of weeks here and there is no issue - we've done that with the doctor's permission when a vaccine wasn't available.
The flu shot is recommended yearly from 6 months, and the first time it's two doses a month apart. It's often out of stock seasonally, so ask your paed or a couple of nearby chemists/hospitals to reserve a vial - it does become available again.
