Some moms find a slow-moving bouncer with a harness handy for settling a baby, but safe-sleep guidance is clear that babies should not be left to sleep in bouncers, rockers, swings, or other inclined seats. For actual sleep, move the baby to a firm, flat surface on their back.
⚠️ Caution:Safe-sleep guidance (e.g. AAP) advises against letting babies sleep in bouncers, swings, car seats, or other inclined/seated devices because of the risk of airway obstruction and suffocation; babies should be moved to a firm, flat surface on their back for sleep. Please follow your pediatrician's advice for your child.
Exhausted parents whose baby finally settles in a bouncer worry whether it's okay to just let them stay asleep there. The honest answer from safe-sleep guidance is that bouncers and rockers are fine for supervised soothing but not for sleep - the safest place for a sleeping baby is on their back on a firm, flat surface.
Here's what moms in our community shared based on their own experience.
Some moms do use a bouncer with a harness to soothe their baby - it moves slowly and the belts hold the baby in - and find the baby drifts off in it. If you use one, stay with the baby and use it for settling, not for unsupervised sleep.
Many of us co-sleep or use a crib/cot for actual sleep. The safe-sleep advice we've been given is that once a baby falls asleep, they should be moved to a firm, flat surface on their back rather than left sleeping in an inclined seat.
