Most moms strongly advise against traditional walkers, saying they can hamper a baby's gait, delay walking and cause injuries; a few disagree if used briefly with a wide base, and push walkers or a sturdy stool/play pen are suggested alternatives.
⚠️ Caution:Walkers carry a real injury risk (falls, reaching hazards) and many pediatricians advise against them. If you have concerns about your baby's motor development or walking, check with your pediatrician.
Parents worry that a walker their family insists on buying could actually harm their baby's development or cause a fall, while also feeling pressure to help the baby walk sooner. The community largely reassures that babies walk naturally in their own time and don't need a walker at all - several share that push carts, sturdy stools to push, or simply a safe play pen with a soft mat worked beautifully, with one mom noting her son started walking entirely on his own.
Here's what moms in our community shared based on their own experience.
Don't use a walker before 1 to 1.5 years; babies learn to walk naturally. Only consider one if the baby hasn't walked by then.
Avoid walkers as they can mess with the baby's walking stance and natural motor skill development.
Not advised by doctors and detrimental for muscle development.
Walkers are banned in many countries; they're dangerous and hamper a child's gait. Babies on walkers tip-toe and can't walk properly. We used a large play pen with a soft mat instead and my son walked on his own.
Walkers cause more injuries than they help and can delay walking. Mine went unused; a push cart she pushed and walked with is what helped.
I disagree with the criticism. We wouldn't let a child sit on it for 4-5 hours, and you should buy one with a bigger base. It's convenient and my daughter enjoys it.
Push walkers aren't necessary for learning to walk but won't do specific harm - like pushing a laundry basket, baby can't pick much speed though they can fall. My baby spends about 10 minutes on it.
Regular walkers aren't recommended anymore - opt for a push walker, or place a sturdy stool with interesting toys and let the baby push it.
Ayurveda says it is beneficial as long as possible since their bodies and minds are growing.
